Ghost Of the Well (कुएं का भूत)

निखिल नाम का एक युवक अपने माता-पिता के साथ एक छोटे से गाँव में रहता था। उसके पिता किसान थे, जो दिनभर खेत में मेहनत करते। निखिल अक्सर घर पर ही रहता और पड़ोस के बच्चों के साथ खेलता रहता। एक दिन खेलते समय उनकी गेंद लुढ़कती हुई पास के जंगल में चली गई।

गेंद ढूँढते हुए वह जंगल में पहुँचा, पर वह नहीं मिली। तभी उसकी नज़र एक पुराने कुएँ पर पड़ी। शायद गेंद उसी में गिरी हो—यह सोचकर उसने झाँककर देखा तो गेंद पानी पर तैर रही थी। निखिल ने गेंद निकालने के लिए एक पेड़ की टहनी तोड़ी, लेकिन वह बहुत छोटी थी।

निराश होकर जैसे ही वह लौटने लगा, गेंद अचानक स्वयं ऊपर आ गई। यह देख वह चकित रह गया।

निखिल ने कुएँ के पास जाकर पूछा, “मेरी गेंद किसने निकाली? मैं उसे धन्यवाद देना चाहता हूँ।”

कुएँ से आवाज़ आई, “मैं इस कुएँ का भूत हूँ। डरो मत, क्या तुम मेरे मित्र बनोगे?”

यह सुन निखिल डरकर भागने लगा, पर कुएँ से रोने की आवाज़ सुनकर वह रुक गया। डरते हुए लौटने पर उसने देखा कि एक सफेद भूत बाहर आया है। भूत ने कहा, “डरो मत, मेरा कोई दोस्त नहीं है। तुम मेरे साथ खेलोगे और दोस्त बनोगे?”

निखिल ने सावधानी से पूछा, “तुम मुझे नहीं खाओगे न?”

भूत ने कहा, “मैं बुरा नहीं हूँ। लोग मुझसे डरते ज़रूर हैं, मगर मैं किसी का बुरा करना नहीं जानता।”

निखिल मान गया, “ठीक है, चलो दोस्त बन जाते हैं। पर हमें चुपचाप मिलना होगा, नहीं तो लोग मुझे भी भूत समझेंगे।”

भूत बोला, “इसमें चिंता की कोई बात नहीं। मैं तो अदृश्य रह सकता हूँ, जब तक स्वयं प्रकट न होऊँ।”

इस प्रकार दोनों में मित्रता हो गई। हर दिन जब निखिल के माता-पिता खेत पर चले जाते, वह भूत से मिलने आता। वे साथ खेलते, बातें करते; भूत उसे कंधे पर बिठाकर घुमाता, कुएँ में ले जाता और सुरक्षित वापस ले आता।

एक दिन एक गाँववाले ने निखिल को कुएँ के पास देख लिया और उसके माता-पिता को सचेत कर दिया कि उनके बेटे पर भूत का साया है। माता-पिता घबराकर आए, लेकिन तब तक निखिल घर लौट चुका था। उन्होंने उसे डाँटते हुए कहा, “आगे से उस कुएँ के पास बिल्कुल नहीं जाना, वहाँ एक भूत रहता है।”

निखिल ने हाँ में सिर हिलाया, लेकिन अगले दिन भूत स्वयं उसके घर आ गया। निखिल ने कहा, “माँ-बाप ने मना किया है।” भूत बहुत दुखी हुआ। तब निखिल ने सुझाव दिया, “तुम मेरे घर में ही रहो, हम यहीं मिलकर खेला करेंगे।”

एक दिन निखिल के पिता ने उसे भूत से बातें करते देख लिया और समझे कि बेटा पागल हो गया है। निखिल ने भूत की सच्चाई बताने की कोशिश की, पर पिता ने विश्वास नहीं किया। उन्होंने निखिल को पढ़ाई के लिए रिश्तेदार के घर भेज दिया।

कई वर्षों बाद, पढ़ाई पूरी कर गाँव लौटने पर निखिल सीधा कुएँ के पास गया, लेकिन भूत वहाँ नहीं था। निराश लौटते समय रास्ते में एक युवक उसे मिला और बताया कि वही वह भूत है, जिसका अब मानव जन्म हो गया है। इस तरह दोनों मित्र पुनः मिल गए और उनकी दोस्ती पहले जैसी ही चलने लगी।

A young man named Nikhil lived with his parents in a small village. His father was a farmer who worked hard in the fields all day. Nikhil often stayed at home and played with the neighborhood children. One day, while playing, their ball rolled away and went into a nearby forest.

While searching for the ball, he reached the forest, but couldn’t find it. Then his eyes fell on an old well. Thinking that the ball might have fallen into it, he peeked inside and saw the ball floating on the water. Nikhil broke a branch from a tree to retrieve the ball, but it was too short.

Just as he was turning back disappointed, the ball suddenly rose up on its own. Seeing this, he was astonished.

Nikhil went near the well and asked, “Who took out my ball? I want to thank them.”

A voice came from the well, “I am the ghost of this well. Don’t be afraid, will you be my friend?”

Hearing this, Nikhil got scared and started to run, but he stopped when he heard crying from the well. Returning cautiously, he saw a white ghost had come out. The ghost said, “Don’t be afraid, I have no friends. Will you play with me and be my friend?”

Nikhil asked carefully, “You won’t eat me, right?”

The ghost said, “I am not evil. People are afraid of me, but I don’t know how to harm anyone.”

Nikhil agreed, “Alright, let’s become friends. But we must meet secretly, otherwise people will think I’m a ghost too.”

The ghost said, “There is nothing to worry about. I can remain invisible, unless I reveal myself.”

And so, the two became friends. Every day, when Nikhil’s parents went to the field, he would come to meet the ghost. They played and talked together; the ghost would give him rides on its shoulders, take him into the well, and bring him back safely.

One day, a villager saw Nikhil near the well and warned his parents that their son was under the influence of a ghost. The worried parents came looking, but by then Nikhil had returned home. They scolded him, saying, “Do not go near that well again; a ghost lives there.”

Nikhil nodded in agreement, but the next day, the ghost itself came to his house. Nikhil said, “My parents have forbidden it.” The ghost was very sad. Then Nikhil suggested, “You stay in my house, we’ll play together here instead.”

One day, Nikhil’s father saw him talking to the ghost and thought his son had gone mad. Nikhil tried to explain the truth about the ghost, but his father didn’t believe him. He sent Nikhil to a relative’s house for his studies.

Many years later, after completing his education and returning to the village, Nikhil went straight to the well, but the ghost was not there. While returning disappointed, he met a young man on the way who told him that he was the same ghost, who had now taken a human birth. And so, the friends reunited, and their friendship continued just as before.
